I have heard management talk about doing sales coaching but discussed having the managers do it.

Tim, sales managers should always use some form of coaching as part of their management style. Although, there are some benefits to outsourcing coaching and those are below as an FYI.

1. Coaching is a skill and by having a full-time coach work with sales staff, the full-time coach may be more effective as he or she will have more experience and expertise with coaching

2. More open line of communication - in a true coaching relationship, there needs to be a completely open line of communication and when a coach is also a manager, there may be some information withheld.

3. More cost effective - there may be a cost with having a coach but if you look at a sales managers time and tie that to revenue, there could be more revenue gained by having internal management work on strategic tasks and outsource the coaching function to a full-time coach.

Food for thought.

This would be great where I work and would complement our training well.
